Common Steps in the Indian Passport Process

The Indian passport process follows a series of common stages, beginning with selecting the appropriate passport service and completing the online application. Applicants then pay the applicable fee, schedule an appointment, visit a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), and complete any verification required for their case.

  1. Identify the Required Passport Service: The first step is to determine which service applies to your situation.
  1. Check the Applicable Documents: Before starting the application, check which documents are required.
  1. Register on Passport Seva: Create an account through the official Passport Seva Portal.
  1. Start the Online Application: After logging in, select the relevant passport service from the dashboard.
  1. Enter Information Carefully: The information entered in the application should be accurate and consistent with the applicant’s supporting documents.
  1. Review the Application: Before submitting the form, carefully review all the information.
  1. Submit the Application: After reviewing the form, submit the online application.
  1. Pay the Applicable Fee: After submitting the application, proceed to payment.
  2. Schedule an Appointment: Once the payment process has been completed, applicants can schedule an appointment through the Passport Seva system.
  1. Visit the PSK or POPSK: The applicant normally needs to appear personally at the selected centre.

The common journey can be summarized as:

Select service → Check documents → Register → Complete online form → Review information → Submit → Pay fee → Book appointment → Visit PSK/POPSK → Verification if applicable → Passport processing → Printing → Dispatch → Delivery

How to Check Your Passport Status After RPO Processing

The official Passport Seva instructions also identify the File Number as the 15-character alphanumeric number printed on the acknowledgement letter. The current official tracker requires:

  2. File Number
  3. Date of Birth
