Passport Status

Checking your passport application status is simple and can be done online from anywhere. Follow the simple steps to check your passport application status online.

Step 1: Visit the Official Website. Go to the Passport Seva website: www.passportindia.gov.in
Step 2: Click on ‘Track Your Application Status.’ On the homepage, find and click on the “Track Application Status” link in the Quick Links section.
Step 3:

Enter Your Details. You will need one of these:

File Number(15-digit number from your application receipt)

Date of Birth(in DD/MM/YYYY format)
Step 4: View Your Status. Click “Track Status” to see your current application stage.

 

What Different Status Messages Mean

Application Submitted / Form Filled Status The application has been successfully submitted online, and the form has been received.
Appointment Booked or  Scheduled Status
  1. The document is submitted along with the passport fee.
  2. The passport application is put on hold at PSK, with a ‘Document Fresh’ or’ Re-submission Required.’ 
Police Verification for Passport Status
  1. Police Verification has been initiated
  2. Pending Physical Police Verification
  3. Police Verification Review to SP Office
  4. Police Verification not clear / Verification Successful
  5. Police Verification Complete or Police Verification report not submitted.
Application Under Process / Under Examination / Under Scrutiny
  1. Passport Application Under Process
  2. Passport Under Review at the Regional Passport Office
  3. Police Report not cleared or pending.
Printed / Dispatched / Delivered

1. Application approved, is being printed.
2. Send to Sent via Speed Post; tracking number provided. 
3. Passport Delivered or Returned Undelivered

 

Number of Stages of Status in a Passport

1 Application Submitted Your online form has been received and submitted.
2 Under Review / Processing Officials check your documents at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).

You can find your 15-digit File Number in these places

 Use the Passport Seva website with the File Number & DOB.
Through SMS Send SMS in this format to 9704100100:

Through Mobile App Download the “mPassport Seva” app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store to track status.

Track Passport Status Through SMS

Step 1: Compose a new SMS on your mobile phone
Step 2:

Type: STATUS [space] [Your File Number]

Example: STATUS MH23123456789
Step 3: Send to: 9704100100
Step 4: Wait for reply (usually within 2-5 minutes)
Step 5: Save the response for future reference

 

Check Passport Status Through Mobile App

Step 1: Open Google Play Store or App Store
Step 2: Search for “mPassport Seva”
Step 3: Tap “Install” (App size: ~15-20 MB)
Step 4: Wait for the download and installation to complete
Step 5: Open the App after installation and create accounts with my email or phone number.
Step 6: From the dashboard, tap “Track Application Status.”
Step 7: File Number: Enter 15-digit application number (e.g., MH23123456789)
Step 8: Date of Birth: Select from calendar or enter manually
Step 9: Tap “Track Status”

Passport Status on Hold at RPO

The Regional Passport Office (RPO) or the processing officer has identified an issue with your application that needs clarification or additional documents before they can proceed. 

Police Verification Report

1. Police verification returned with an adverse or unclear report.
2. Your current address could not be verified.
3. A police case or discrepancy was found between your application details and local police records.
Documentary Issues
  1. Submitted documents (e.g., Address Proof, Date of Birth certificate) are unclear, invalid, or appear suspicious.
  2. A mismatch between the name/address on different documents.
  3. Non-submission of a required document ( marriage certificate or annexure).
Pending Clearance  A court case or police case is pending against you.

Passport Status for Police Verification

1. Police Verification Initiated Police Verification has been initiated, and a request has been sent to the Police Authorities.
2. Verification Pending  Police Verification is pending at the police station.
3. Police Report Awaited Police Verification is underway, and the report is awaited.
4. Report Under review Police Verification Report has been received and is under review at the Passport Office.
5. Verification Report Adverse or Hold Police Verification Report is adverse. or Status on Hold.
6. Police Verification Report Clear Police Verification Report is clear, and the passport is under printing

Under Review at Regional Passport Office Status

Some reasons for this are shown in the under review passport status as follows:

1. Police verification is not completed at my respective police station.
2. Police verification is complete at my respective police station, but the police report has not sent to the regional office.
3. The application name does mismatched with the given initial proof.
4. The form address is mismatched with the given address proof.
5. The police station name is mismatched with the given form.
6. The birthplace is mismatched with the given birth certificate proof.
7. The date of birth is mismatched with the given birth certificate proof.
8. Police verification is not completed by the applicant.
9. The father’s or mother’s name does not match the document on the form.
10. Don’t give your old passport number or details in the submission
11. And also not submit the proper annexure form.
12. The applicants hold more than one passport.

Passport Status Not Updating  or Not Found, or Not Available 

“File Number Not Found” / “No Records Found”
  1. Too Early to Check: You are checking within 1-3 working days of submitting your application.
  2. Incorrect File Number: A simple typo in the 15-digit file number.
  3. Using the Wrong Tracking Page
“Not Available” or Blank Page
  1. Temporary System Maintenance: The Passport Seva portal may be undergoing maintenance or high traffic.
  2. Browser/Cache Issues: Problems with your web browser.
Status Has Not Updated for Weeks/Months
  1. Application Pending: Your physical file might be waiting for review by an officer, for documents, or for police verification.
  2. Police Verification Delay: The file is with the local police, and they haven’t updated the police report.”
  3. File is “On Hold”: There might be an unresolved issue, but the status hasn’t been changed to “On Hold”.
