Guide to the Indian Passport Application Procedure

Applying for an Indian passport involves online registration, completing the application, paying the applicable fee, booking an appointment, document verification, and—where required—police verification.

  1. Register on the Passport Seva Portal:  Begin by visiting the official Passport Seva Portal and creating an account. Select the appropriate Regional Passport Office (RPO) during registration.
  1. Choose the Required Service: After logging in, select the service that matches your requirement:
  • Fresh Passport – for a first-time applicant
  • Re-issue of Passport – for renewal or other eligible reasons
  • Lost or Damaged Passport – for applicable cases
  • Other services available through the portal
  1. Complete the Application Form: Enter the requested information carefully. This may include your personal details, date and place of birth, residential address, family information, and previous passport details, where applicable.
  1. Submit the Application:  Submit the completed application through the Passport Seva portal and retain your Application Reference Number (ARN) and other application details.
  1. Pay the Passport Fee: Pay the applicable fee through the available online payment facility. The amount depends on factors such as the applicant’s age, type of service, booklet size, and whether Normal or Tatkaal service is selected.
  1. Book an Appointment: Select an available appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
  1. Attend the PSK/POPSK Appointment: Visit the selected centre on your appointment date and complete the prescribed application-processing and verification procedures.
  1. Police Verification: Police verification may be required depending on the applicant’s circumstances and the Passport Office’s decision. Where applicable, it may take place before or after passport issuance.
  1. Passport Issuance and Delivery: Once the application has successfully completed the required processing and verification, the passport is printed and dispatched to the applicant’s address.
  1. Track Your Application: Applicants can use the official Passport Seva portal to check their application status using the relevant application details.

Important: Passport requirements can differ according to the applicant and type of service. Before applying, check the official Passport Seva portal for the latest documents, fees, appointment requirements, and application instructions.
