Passport Office Amritsar & Punjab – RPO, PSK, POPSK

Passport Office, Amritsar started functioning on 28 June 2008. The head office is located at Ajnala Road, Amritsar. It maintains 5 passport centres. This Regional Office covers districts such as Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Ferozepur, Faridkot, and Fazilka.

In Punjab, there are three types of passport offices. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) maintains them. The office types are:

  1. Regional Passport Office (RPO):  This is the Regional Head Office in Amritsar that handles final approvals and printing.
  2. Passport Seva Kendra (PSK): This centre processes documents and biometric verification. (e.g., PSK Amritsar)
  3. Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK): In small town passport application process is handled by the head post office.

Things to Prepare Before Applying for a Passport

  1. DOB: Applicants born after 1989 must have a birth certificate to apply for a passport. Birth documents from 2002 require a QR code.
  2. Application: Check that your name, address, and DOB are correctly matched across your documents.
  3. Documents: Keep all original documents and photocopies ready. QR codes should be included on photocopies, while laminated documents may sometimes be rejected.
  4. Appointment: A total of three appointments are available at the Passport Seva Kendra.
  5. Time: Reach the passport office 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  6. Application Type: Minor and lost or damaged passport cases are not processed through the Tatkaal scheme.
  7. Post Office: Applications will not be accepted at POPSKs for change of personal details, Non-ECR, Single Parent cases, Pending Court Case, and lost or damaged passport.

Indian Passport Application Process Explained

  1. Register on Passport Seva: Visit the official Passport Seva portal and create an account. Select the appropriate Regional Passport Office (RPO) during registration.
  1. Complete the Passport Application: Log in and select “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport.” Enter your personal information, address, family details, and other required information carefully.
  1. Submit the Application: After completing the form, submit the application and note the Application Reference Number (ARN). Keep this information available for tracking your application.
  1. Pay the Passport Fee: Pay the applicable passport fee through the available online payment options. The amount depends on factors such as the applicant’s age, passport booklet size, and whether the application is under the normal or Tatkaal scheme.
  1. Schedule an Appointment: After payment, select an available appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
  1. Visit the PSK/POPSK: Attend the appointment on the scheduled date with the required original documents and copies. The application is processed through the prescribed verification stages at the centre.
  1. Police Verification: Depending on the application and Passport Office decision, police verification may be conducted. The verification process can be pre-issue or post-issue, depending on the case.
  1. Passport Printing and Dispatch: Once the application is approved and the required verification is completed, the passport is printed and dispatched to the applicant’s address.
  1. Track the Application: Applicants can use the official Passport Seva portal to check the current status of their application and passport dispatch.

You can track your Indian passport application online through the official Passport Seva Portal. The status can be checked using your File Number and Date of Birth.

Steps to Check Passport Application Status

  1. Visit the official Passport Seva Portal.
  2. Open Track Application Status.
  3. Select the appropriate Application Type, such as Passport/PCC/IC/GEP.
  4. Enter your File Number.
  5. Enter your Date of Birth.
  6. Click Track Application Status.
  7. Your current application status and the latest processing information will be displayed.
