There are several types of passports that are issued by the Government of India, depending on the purpose of travel and the applicant’s status. The main types of passports are:

  1. Regular Passport: This is the most common type of passport issued in India. It is valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors. It is issued to Indian citizens who are traveling abroad for leisure, business, or to visit family and friends.

  2. Diplomatic Passport: This type of passport is issued to diplomats, government officials, and their families who are traveling abroad on official business. It is valid for an unlimited period of time. Diplomatic passport holders are entitled to special privileges and immunities while traveling abroad.

  3. Official Passport: This type of passport is issued to government officials and employees who are traveling abroad on official business. It is also valid for an unlimited period of time.

  4. Emergency Certificate (EC): This type of document is issued to Indian citizens who are abroad and need to return to India urgently, but do not have a valid passport. It is issued for a single journey and is valid for a maximum period of one year.

  5. Police Clearance Certificate (PCC): This document is issued to Indian citizens who are abroad and need to prove their good conduct. It is issued by the Indian police and is required for various purposes such as obtaining a visa, emigrating, or adopting a child.

  6. Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card: This card is issued to foreign citizens of Indian origin who are traveling to India. It is valid for 15 years and allows the holder to enjoy the same privileges and exemptions as a regular Indian passport holder.

  7. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card: This card is issued to foreign citizens of Indian origin who are living abroad permanently. It is valid for an unlimited period of time and allows the holder to enjoy the same privileges and exemptions as a regular Indian passport holder.

It is important to note that all types of passport applications can be applied for in person or online, and require a set of documents as well as an appointment. The applicant must carry original and photocopy of required documents along with the application form and fee.

In order to apply for a passport, the applicant should have a valid residence proof, birth certificate, and a valid ID proof. The government also requires the applicant to have a recent passport-size photograph and have to submit a self-attested copy of the same.

The processing time for a passport application can vary depending on the type of passport and the applicant’s location. Regular passport applications typically take around 2-3 weeks to process, while diplomatic and official passport applications may take longer.

It’s also important to note that the Indian government has started issuing e-passports which contains a microchip with the holder’s biometric information, including fingerprints and facial recognition. These e-passports are more secure and easy to verify compared to the regular passport.

In summary, the Indian government issues several types of passports for different purposes and to different categories of applicants, including regular, diplomatic, official, emergency certificate, police clearance certificate, PIO and OCI card. Each type has different validity period and specific requirements, it’s important to choose the right type of passport based on the purpose of your travel and your status, and to ensure that you have all the necessary documents in order before applying.
