Passport Application Under Normal Processing

The Normal Passport application process is the standard route for obtaining an Indian passport when an applicant does not need to use the Tatkaal scheme. It can be used for eligible fresh passport applications and re-issue applications.

Under Normal processing, the applicant completes the application online, pays the applicable passport fee, obtains an appointment, visits the selected Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), and completes the required verification and processing.

  1. What Does Normal Passport Processing Mean:  Normal processing refers to the standard passport application route rather than Tatkaal.  It can apply to:
  • Fresh passport applications
  • Re-issue of passports
  • Replacement in applicable cases
  • Change in personal particulars
  • Other eligible ordinary passport services
  1. Who Can Apply Under Normal Processing:  Eligible Indian citizens can apply through the Normal passport process. An applicant may be:
  • Applying for a passport for the first time
  • Renewing or replacing an existing passport through re-issue
  • Applying as a minor
  • Applying as a senior citizen
  • Applying as a student
  • Applying for a passport for personal, professional, educational, or travel purposes
  1. Fresh Passport or Re-Issue: Before beginning the application, determine the correct service.

Fresh Passport: A fresh passport is generally for a person who has never held an Indian passport.

Re-Issue of Passport: Re-issue is generally applicable when an applicant already has a passport and needs another passport because of circumstances such as expiry, exhaustion of pages, change in particulars, damage, or other permitted reasons.

Selecting the correct service is important because the document requirements can differ.

  1. Register on the Official Passport Seva Portal: The Normal application begins online. The current official process is:
  1. Open the Passport Seva Portal.
  2. Select Register.
  3. Enter the required registration information.
  4. Confirm the registered email address.
  5. Log in.
  6. Open the Services section.
  7. Select Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport.

The complete process can be summarized as:

Register → Select Fresh/Re-Issue → Select RPO → Complete Form → Review Details → Submit → Pay Normal Fee → Schedule Appointment → Visit PSK/POPSK → Document Verification → Police Verification if Required → Passport Processing → Printing → Dispatch → Delivery

Passport Status After Passport Printing Is Completed

Seeing a passport application status indicating that the passport has been printed is generally an important step toward completion of the application. It means the application has moved beyond the earlier processing stages and the passport booklet has been printed.

However, printing does not necessarily mean that the passport has already been dispatched or delivered. The next stage is normally the preparation and dispatch of the printed passport, followed by postal delivery.

What Does “Passport Has Been Printed” Mean?

A printed status indicates that the passport booklet has reached the printing stage.

At this point, applicants should understand the difference between these stages:

Application processing → Passport granted → Passport printed → Passport dispatched → Passport delivered
