Passport Office, Chennai, started functioning in the year 1955. The head office is located at Anna Salai, Chennai. It maintains 20 passport centres. This Regional Office covers districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Thirupathur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore and Puducherry.

Tamil Nadu has three types of passport offices. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) maintains them. The types are:

  1. Regional Passport Office (RPO):  This is the Regional Head Office of Chennai that handles final approvals and printing.
  2. Passport Seva Kendra (PSK): This centre processes documents and biometric verification. (e.g., PSK Tambaram)
  3. Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK): In small towns, the head post office handles the passport application process.

Before Applying for a Passport: Important Points to Remember

  1. DOB: After 1989, a birth certificate is compulsory to apply for a passport. A QR code is necessary for birth documents from 2002.
  2. Application: Review your documents and ensure that your name, address, and DOB are correctly matched.
  3. Documents: Keep the original documents and photocopies available. Photocopies should include a QR code, and laminated documents can sometimes be rejected.
  4. Appointment: Applicants get only three appointments at the Passport Seva Kendra.
  5. Time: Plan to arrive at the passport office 15 minutes before the appointment.
  6. Application Type: Minor and lost or damaged passport applications are not processed under the Tatkaal scheme.
