How the Indian Passport Application Process Works

The Indian passport application process combines online application steps with an in-person visit to a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). The basic process is as follows:

  1. Register Online: Visit the official Passport Seva Portal and create an applicant account. Select the appropriate Regional Passport Office (RPO).
  1. Select the Passport Service:After signing in, choose the service that applies to your situation, such as:
  • Fresh Passport for a first-time application
  • Re-issue of Passport for eligible renewal or other re-issue cases
  • Lost or Damaged Passport for applicable cases
  1. Complete the Application: Enter your personal information, date and place of birth, address, family details, and other requested information. Applicants should make sure the information is accurate and consistent with their supporting documents.
  1. Submit and Pay: Submit the completed application online and pay the applicable passport fee. The fee depends on factors such as the applicant’s age, booklet size, service type, and Normal or Tatkaal category.
  1. Schedule an Appointment: Book an available appointment at a PSK or POPSK through the Passport Seva system.
  1. Prepare the Documents: Check the official Passport Seva Document Advisor to determine which documents apply to your particular case. Carry the required originals and copies to the appointment.
  1. Visit the Passport Centre: Attend the appointment at the selected PSK or POPSK. Your application and supporting documents will go through the prescribed processing and verification stages.

Applicants can monitor their application through the official Passport Seva Portal using their application details.

In simple terms:
Register → Apply Online → Pay Fee → Book Appointment → Visit PSK/POPSK → Document Verification → Police Verification (if required) → Passport Issued → Delivery

How to Check Passport Reissue Application Status

If you have applied for re-issue of an Indian passport, you can track the application online through the official Passport Seva Portal. The same online status-tracking system is used for passport applications, including re-issue applications.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Open the official Passport Seva Portal: Go to the official Passport Seva website and select Track Passport Application.
  1. Select the Application Type: Choose Passport as the application type on the tracking page. The official instructions specify that applicants must first select the application type.
  1. Enter the File Number: Enter the 15-digit alphanumeric File Number printed on your acknowledgement letter.
  1. Enter the Date of Birth: Enter the applicant’s Date of Birth in the required format.
  1. Click the Track button: Select Track Application Status to view the latest available status of your re-issue application.
