Renewal Passport Comprehensive Guide in India

 

Based on the information from official Indian government sources, a passport can be renewed when it is about to expire, has expired, or has run out of pages. It’s best to apply at least six months to one year before the expiry date to avoid any last-minute issues, especially if you have travel plans.

 

Documents Required for Renewal or Reissue

Reissue Passport Fees

Renewal Passport Application Process

6 Collect New Passport Collect the new passport by speed post with email or SMS notification during the specified collection hours.

 

Reissue Processing Timing

Processing times vary based on the service type and whether police verification is required.

  • Normal Processing: Typically takes 30 to 60 days.

  • Tatkal Processing: This is an expedited service for urgent cases. Once approved, passports are often dispatched within 3 to 7 working days.

 

Renewal Police Verification

    • No Verification: If you are applying within one year before or after the expiry of your passport, police verification is not needed.

    • Verification Required: In many cases, especially when applying for renewal after 6 months or changes in personal details, police verification may be conducted. 

    • Verification Time: Police verification will be completed within 21 days. If Police verification is not completed, you go to the police station or lodge complain in regional passport office.

  1. Go to the official Passport Seva website.

  2. Click on the “Track Application Status” link.

  3. Enter your 15-digit file number and your date of birth to see the current status of your application.
