What Happens After Submitting a Passport Application?

Submitting an Indian passport application online or completing the application process at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) is only one stage of the overall process. After submission, the application goes through processing, verification, and, where applicable, police verification before the passport is printed and dispatched.

  1. Application Processing Begins: After the application is successfully processed at the PSK or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), the Passport Office handles the required back-end processing.
  1. The Application Receives a Processing Status: Applicants can monitor the progress of their passport application using the File Number and date of birth.
  1. Police Verification May Take Place: Police verification is not necessarily carried out in the same way for every applicant. Passport Seva identifies pre-police verification and post-police verification as two modes. The Passport Office determines the applicable mode based on the application and circumstances.
  1. What Happens in Pre-Police Verification?

Under pre-police verification, the police report is obtained before the passport is printed. Passport Seva states that when an application is granted on a pre-verification basis, passport printing is initiated after a clear police report is received. Therefore, the passport may take longer in cases where police verification is still pending.

  1. What Happens in Post-Police Verification?

Under post-police verification, the passport can be issued before the police verification report is received. Passport Seva states that for eligible applications processed under post-police verification, printing can proceed without waiting for the police report. Police verification can then take place after the passport has been issued.

  1. The Passport Is Printed: Once the application reaches the appropriate stage for issuance, the Passport Office initiates passport printing. For applications requiring pre-police verification, a clear police report is required before printing. For eligible post- or no-police-verification cases, printing can begin without waiting for a police report.
  1. Passport Is Prepared for Dispatch: After printing and the necessary finishing processes, the passport is prepared for delivery. The passport is normally dispatched through India Post Speed Post to the present address entered in the passport application.

The post-submission process can be summarised as:

Application Submitted → Processing → Granting Decision → Police Verification if Applicable → Passport Printing → Lamination/Preparation → Speed Post Dispatch → Delivery

Passport Application Status Timeline: From Application to Delivery

An Indian passport application normally passes through several stages, starting with online submission and appointment processing and ending with passport delivery. The exact timeline can vary depending on the type of application, police verification requirements, document checks, workload at the concerned office, and whether any clarification is required.

Stage What Usually Happens
1. Online application submitted The applicant completes the passport application and submits it online.
2. Appointment booked An appointment is scheduled at the selected Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), where applicable.
3. Appointment and document verification The applicant visits the centre, and the application and supporting documents are processed.
4. Application processing Passport Seva processes the application and determines whether police verification is required.
5. Police verification Where applicable, the police verification process is initiated and completed.
6. Passport printing After the required checks are completed, the passport moves to printing.
7. Passport dispatch The printed passport is dispatched through the designated postal delivery system.
8. Delivery The passport is delivered to the applicant’s address.
